The History of the Shively Wall at Blanchard Community Library
The Shively Wall at the Blanchard Community Library stands as a tribute to Santa Paula’s rich artistic heritage and the enduring legacy of Douglas Shively, a beloved local artist, philanthropist, and advocate for the arts. This dedicated exhibition space was established to celebrate the creative voices of the community, offering local artists a public platform to share their work and engage with library visitors.
The concept of the Shively Wall emerged from a shared vision between the library and the Santa Paula Society of the Arts, recognizing the vital role that public art plays in fostering cultural enrichment. Since its inception, the wall has showcased an ever-evolving collection of works from artists across Ventura County and beyond, reflecting the diverse talent and perspectives within the region.
Unlike static collections, the Shively Wall is a rotating exhibition space, ensuring that new artistic expressions are continually introduced to the public. In keeping with Douglas Shively’s belief that art should be both accessible and inspirational, the space also incorporates community engagement opportunities, inviting artists to lead workshops, discussions, and educational programs that deepen the connection between art and audience.
Today, the Shively Wall remains a cornerstone of Santa Paula’s cultural landscape, carrying forward the legacy of creativity, education, and artistic appreciation championed by its namesake.

A Brief History of Douglas Shively
Douglas Shively (1896–1991) was a renowned California landscape artist, rancher, and passionate supporter of the arts in Santa Paula. Born into a pioneering family, Shively was deeply connected to the land, drawing inspiration from Ventura County’s scenic beauty—its rolling hills, lush orchards, and breathtaking coastal vistas.
Shively’s artistic journey was shaped by the California Impressionist movement, and he became well-known for his masterful plein air paintings that captured the vibrant light and natural splendor of the region. Despite his talent, he initially pursued a career in banking and ranching, following family expectations. However, his love for painting never wavered, and he ultimately dedicated himself to his artistic practice, earning recognition for his soft, atmospheric landscapes that evoke a timeless sense of place.
